Senior Product Designer

Remote, Toronto

Hatchways' mission is bold. We're modernizing education by helping people new to the tech industry get real, practical experience on-the-job instead of in the classroom.

Our goal is to provide access to opportunities to people who otherwise would have been overlooked through our background-blind skills assessment and project-based work simulations.

Hatchways is a place you come to make an impact, working with like-minded people to build something meaningful-- a future we'd like to live in.

About the role:

As the first Product Designer on the team, you will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with both the CEO and CTO (co-founders) on reimagining how employers hire people that are non-obvious, and traditionally overlooked, through innovative design. We are looking for someone who is unafraid to take risks, who is highly empathetic and thrives in a startup environment. You'll have full ownership of the design process, including research, testing, cross-functional communication, copywriting, and visual and brand design. As we grow, you'll also have the opportunity to continue to be an individual contributor or have the opportunity to lead a team.

This role is open to anyone around the world. A slight preference for someone in Canada.

What we're looking for:

  • Someone who can get a high-level product goal (ie. sign up more users) and create a strategy and plan towards solving that
  • Strong blue-sky thinking, not afraid to take risks and enjoys pushing boundaries of design
  • Wants to also get in the weeds and take that strategy all the way through to execution
  • Understands the power of validation
  • Prototypes as a tool for discovery - hypothesis-based iteration
  • Early-stage startup experience- bonus if you've also built a team/hired other designers before (this would happen down the line)
  • Able to see the links between co-dependent product lines and design information architectures that elegantly make for an overall seamless experience across the ecosystem
  • Believes beautiful UI makes for better UX, with a focus on responsive web
  • Aligned with values of helping underrepresented folks (i.e. cares deeply about accessibility)
  • Knows how to design for scale by creating flexible systems and documents just enough to allow for clear communication
  • Has worked closely with developers, product managers, and partner stakeholders to iterate on user-facing products
  • Compelling, empathetic storyteller and collaborator, able to get the team excited about how design can help solve problems while delighting the folks it's meant to help
  • Excited to lead and have ownership over product design at a thoughtfully-growing startup
